SUSTAINING THE FLOW

A newsletter for partners of the Alabama Rivers Alliance

In two weeks, we will have the opportunity to go to the polls once again for an important election. Not only will we be choosing our next President, but Alabama has a brand new congressional district! If you happen to live in Congressional District 2, you have the rare occurrence of an actual competitive race in Alabama. This is a tight race and your vote matters! Learn whether you are in District 2 and more voter info at this link

The right – and responsibility – to vote is something we take very seriously at the Alabama Rivers Alliance, because we know how important elected officials are when it comes to making decisions about protecting our waterways and the many aspects of our lives that impact clean water. We also know that the right to vote is not shared equally among all individuals. States across the country, including Alabama, have been passing legislation that makes voting more challenging, particularly for certain populations. We are dedicating the October 2024 issue of our partner newsletter to the importance of voting by highlighting activities happening around the state where you can get involved in helping GET OUT THE VOTE for November 5 and other ways to get involved with our many partners working on voting rights and voter access in Alabama!

P.S. Don’t forget to join us today at noon today (October 22) for Water is Life: Get Out the Vote with League of Women Voters of Alabama and the Alabama State Conference of the NAACP. Click here to register or join us live.

 AROUND THE ARA OFFICE

  • Jack thoroughly enjoyed attending the inaugural Southern Public Interest Environmental Law (SPIEL) conference in Sewanee, TN (for non-lawyers and lawyers) this month where he reconnected with Alabama partners, made some new attorney friends, helped present a screening of curated Southern Exposure Films during the conference, and came up with an idea for a presentation for next year's SPIEL conference.
  • Martha attended the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Committee (WHEJAC) meeting in Huntsville, where we heard from panelists about specific issues. We then heard public comments from participants about important EJ issues. Several of our partners also joined in this nationwide sharing. We also had the opportunity to introduce several partners to our friend Catherine Coleman Flowers, director of the Center for Rural Enterprise and Environmental Justice (CREEJ) and co-vice chair of WHEJAC.
  • Charles also attended the WHEJAC meeting, and then joined Jack in Sewanee, TN for SPIEL, where he presented "Fragmented Landscape: Changes in State Waters Jurisdiction after Sackett v. EPA". SPIEL was a wonderful gathering of advocates from across the Southeast (and beyond!). The highlight for him was an overview of the last 50 years of environmental law from Zygmund Plater, one of the attorneys involved in the landmark Endangered Species Act case, TVA v. Hill.
  • Between organizing, categorizing and purgizizing for the anticipated office move, Kelly took some breaks to launch the new SE films online (click here to watch them!), and then submit them to film festivals across the globe. She's also working with Coosa Riverkeeper on the super cool River Reels & Tales Tour, and she edited and pitched a couple of op-eds from Cindy and Jack. Click here to read Cindy's "Alabama Tiptoes Towards Clean Energy" and stay tuned for Jack's coming soon!
