This newsletter's purpose is to help us all sustain the flow & keep moving forward together in our respective work in Alabama. REGULATORY NEWS & COMMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Relevant environmental regulatory updates & opportunities to agencies to let them know how their decision can impact your work.

 

ADEM ANNOUNCES UPDATES TO HAZARDOUS WASTE RULEMAKING

ADEM announced revisions to their Hazardous Waste Program, described in section 335-14 of ADEM's Administrative Code, and a subsequent public hearing and opportunity for comments will be held. Revisions are to codify two federal rules by the EPA into state law. Hearing will be on January 24, 2023 and comments are due the same day. Learn more.

 

ENGAGE WITH THE WHITE HOUSE ABOUT ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

Explain how environmental justice issues impact your community to the White House! The White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council (WHEJAC) & National Environmental Justice Advisory Council (NEJAC) are hosting an public comment period and hybrid meeting to hear from communities about environmental justice topics. Register to join the oral public comment sessions on November 30 and December 1, comments are due by December 14, sign up and more details here.

 

OPEN MEETINGS ACT NOTIFICATION

Sign up on the Secretary of State's Open Meetings Act website to get email notifications when public meeting are scheduled for all public boards, agencies, commissions, and other governmental bodies around Alabama. Sign up for just your local community meetings or the whole state. This is particularly useful for governmental bodies that may call meeting irregularly! Learn more.

WHAT WE ARE THANKFUL FOR AROUND THE ARA OFFICE

  • Cindy is thankful for beautiful Alabama nature, hard-working, caring Alabama people and for Hallmark Christmas movies to help her escape from the stresses of the real world! 

  • Kelly is thankful for the Better Call Saul ending, and that she survived another year without setting herself off to sea!

  • Jack is thankful for rain and blustery, foggy fall days. And for Mucinex.

  • Martha is thankful for the amazing partners she gets to work with around the state, her friends and family that surround and support her, and the hopeful future of more baby goats in the spring!

  • Victoria is thankful to be working with all the lovely folks listed above and to be supplying y'all with this newsletter.

  • Congrats to the Alabama Scenic River Trail on welcoming a new Executive Director, Andrew Szymanski, to their team! Read more about him in ASRT's update email.
  • Join the Southern Environmental Law Center in their petition to urge the EPA to protect our drinking water from PFAS and protect people over polluters. Sign on now!
  • Waterkeepers Alabama recently took a jaunt around the Mobile Bay with Mobile Baykeeper as a part of their Ten Rivers Project with the Mosaic Momentum. Check out some trip photos.
  • The Alabama Water Watch Program is running a holiday t-shirt fundraiser until midnight on Giving Tuesday, featuring their new mascot. Grab one for yourself. 
  • ARA's friend Dr. Bill Deutsch has written a new book! Check out Ancient Life in Alabama: The Fossils, The Finders, and Why It Matters.
  • Mobile area folks should visit the EX-Tabula RASA, a site-specific installation that takes waste & detritus of modern life & transforms it into art by Sally Heller, at the Alabama Contemporary Art Center through February 25th. Mobile Baykeeper partnered with the Alabama Contemporary Art Center through NOAA's Reduse the Use program. Get a sneak peak of the exhibit here.
  • The Sierra Club National has announced a new Executive Director, Ben Jealous, who is an experienced civil rights leader and community organizer. Read more about him.
