DAM DECOMMISSION & REMOVAL IN THE CHATTAHOOCHEE WATERSHED

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has filed a Notice of Intent to Prepare an Environmental Assessment (EA) in the next step of Georgia Power's application to surrender, decommission, and remove two hydroelectric projects in the Chattahoochee River watershed. Those projects are the Langdale Hydroelectric Project in Chambers County, Alabama and the Riverview Hydroelectric Project in Harris County, Alabama. Now, FERC is preparing an EA to analyze what impact the removal of these dams could have on the surrounding area and wildlife. The EA is expected to be completed and open for comment within a year of this notice. Read the notice & plans to decommission here.

PLANT GREENE COUNTY ASH POND UIC APPLICATION

Alabama Power Company has applied for an Underground Injection Control (UIC) Permit for Plant Greene County from the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM). The UIC application seeks to inject manganese chloride and other salts underground to aid in remediation of their existing groundwater contamination. Alabama Power is injecting these chemicals into groundwater in an attempt to reduce pollution that resulted from storing Plant Greene's coal ash in a location where it was able to migrate into groundwater. The contaminants targeted by this process include heavy metals like cobalt, lithium, and arsenic that are present in the groundwater on site. Check out the full application for more details and the public notice for comment procedures. Comments are due by February 9, 2024.
