SUSTAINING THE FLOW

A newsletter for partners of the Alabama Rivers Alliance

Happy holidays and welcome to the December 2023 edition of ARA's monthly partner newsletter! Our partner newsletter's purpose is to help us all sustain the flow & keep moving forward together in our respective work in Alabama. Open us up this month to read about upcoming events, comment opportunities, job postings, funding opportunities, and news from folks working to #DefendRivers across the state.

REGULATORY NEWS & COMMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Relevant environmental regulatory updates & opportunities to let agencies know how their decisions can impact your work.

STAY AGREEMENT REACHED IN ACF "WATER WARS" LAWSUIT

The State of Alabama, State of Georgia, the US Army Corps of Engineers, and the Water Supply Providers of Georgia have reached a stay agreement in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint "Water Wars" lawsuit. The agreement asks the USACE to establish minimum average water flows at gauges in Columbus, Georgia and Columbia, Alabama and minimum average lake elevation at Lake Seminole. Access the Stay Agreement here.

ARA will be providing more information once we have a chance to review the agreement and its implications. There will be future opportunities to comment after the USACE conducts and releases their environmental review of the decision. See what the governors and ARA have to say to Bama Buzz here.

GOOD TO KNOW: ADEM DIRECTOR's REPORT TO AEMC

Read a copy of ADEM Director LeFleur's most recent report to the Alabama Environmental Management Commission from December 8, 2023. The AEMC is charged with oversight of the Director, so he reports to them at each of their bi-monthly meetings. These reports give an indication of the Director's priorities and perspectives on specific areas of the agency's work that may be of interest to your organization or your community. Read the Director's Report here.

STAFF READING/LISTENING LIST

Media Recommendations from ARA

This month we decided to share some of our favorite listening, watching, and/or reading recommendations! Share a few of your own media recommendations with us here!

  • Kelly strongly recommends everyone cancel their Holiday plans and watch the only season ever created of Years and Years. This HBO series is the only dramatic fiction Kelly's ever seen (and she's seen them all) that actually explores some practical implications of climate change and other trending topics of the world. If you watch, please let's start a weekly lunch to discuss!
  • Jack recommends the podcast, This Land, about the history of Native land and the fascinating saga of a Supreme Court case arguing land rights and native sovereignty.
  • Cindy loves public radio and recommends her favorite NPR podcast, ThroughlineAnd the Gimlet podcast, How to Save a Planet!
  • Martha loves hearing from our younger generations about everything from the need for a Circular Economy and Climate Change to the importance of having a vision. She recommends two inspiring leaders from Alabama: Ankur Shah's YouTube Channel & Abigail Franks' podcast Climate Justice Y'all.
  • V recommends another podcast by an awesome member of our Young Professional River Defenders, Corinne Baroni's H2O Tea Time!
