 AROUND THE ARA OFFICE

  • We've been working in North Alabama on issues community members brought to us. ARA and our partners at Southern Environmental Law Center have filed comments with ADEM opposing this reckless and ill-considered project, see those comments here.
  • HB 434, a bill naming the Alabama shad as the Official State Migratory Fish, passed out of committee unanimously this past week! Stay tuned for next steps when we will need your help to ensure its passage. Read HB 434 here!
  • We had an awesome Rivers of Alabama Day in Montgomery and had about 15 groups and organizations represented among the partners present as we talked with our legislators about all the issues impacting our rivers and streams.
  • ARA's Young Professional River Defenders had a wonderful Saturday afternoon hiking around Hurricane Creek and getting to learn about the creek through the eyes of its caretaker, THE Hurricane Creekkeeper, John Wathen! See photos from the hike on Facebook here.

 RIVERS OF ALABAMA DAY PROCLAMATION

We were thrilled that the City of Montgomery designated the second Tuesday in April as Rivers of Alabama Day, in symphony with the State Legislature’s designation in 2007! Cindy was invited to accept the proclamation from the FIRST city to make such a designation. We can't wait for other cities and towns across Alabama to follow their lead. Special thank you to the City of Montgomery, the Friends of the Alabama River, Councilor Andrew Szymanski, and Mayor Steven L. Reed for this special proclamation!
