After the highly controversial and widely opposed “Project Marvel” proposed data center rezoning in Bessemer, the City of Birmingham is considering a 6 month moratorium on all data center related activities. This pause on data center-related permitting, rezoning, and approval would give Birmingham time to develop a thoughtful approach to these resource-intensive projects - one that considers the needs and wants of Birmingham residents.

As a Birmingham resident, I watched with concern as the Bessemer City Council rushed through an ill-considered proposal for a hyperscale data center that would almost certainly increase utility rates for residents throughout Jefferson County, including Birmingham residents. Thank you for considering a temporary pause on data center construction, expansion, or establishment in order to avoid a similar outcome in Birmingham. I urge you to support this moratorium on data center construction. This 6-month pause will allow the city to do the necessary due diligence to ensure that new data center proposals receive the proper attention, and to take steps to avoid undue impacts to Birmingham residents. I know that data centers can coexist with other forms of development, but we also know that a new wave of “hyperscale” data center development, driven by investment in “AI” technologies will have greater resource impacts than many existing data centers. We believe that Birmingham, and all other cities in Alabama, need to take a hard look at how to adjust to this emerging sector of the economy, and that a pause on data center activities in the city is a sensible way to approach these issues. Please vote “yes” on this proposal when it comes before you. Thank you,
