During Earth Week 2024, a bold plan to protect America’s freshwater resources was announced. The America the Beautiful Freshwater Challenge is a voluntary partnership to conserve and protect America’s rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands. It sets a bold national goal of to protect, restore, and reconnect 8 million acres of wetlands and 100,000 miles of our nation’s rivers and streams by 2030.
More than 100 groups, including states, cities, Native American Tribes, and non-profits like Alabama Rivers Alliance have already joined the Challenge.
Now, we’re asking Governor Ivey to bring the state of Alabama into the Challenge. Alabama is home to an unmatched wealth of water resources. We have more than 132,000 miles of rivers and streams, as well as the greatest amount of freshwater aquatic biodiversity in the country. Thirteen other states have already joined the Challenge, but none of them can match Alabama’s freshwater resources. It’s time for our state to step up, not only to protect our rivers, streams, and wetlands, but to demonstrate the importance of Alabama’s freshwater resources to the world.
